Zinhle Essamuah, a reporter and guest anchor for NBC News Now, shared her healthcare journey. Zinhle was diagnosed with with fibroids 3 years before ending up in the emergency room with a fibroid the size of her uterus. She hopes that by sharing her experience, she can encourage more women to take their health into their own hands.
Fibroids Affect Most Women
As Dr. Taraneh Shirazian shares, 70% of all women develop fibroids, and black women are more affected than other racial groups. It is a very common medical condition.
Only a third of fibroids are large enough to be detected, and symptoms can be debilitating. Some of the most common symptoms are bloating, bleeding, pain, urinary frequency, difficulty getting pregnant, and pain with sex.
