Uterine fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) tumors that grow on or within the lining of the uterus. They are among the most common conditions affecting women, up to 70% develop fibriods by menopause.
African-American women are at increased risk. They are more likely to develop fibroids at younger ages, experience larger and more numerous tumors, and report more severe symptoms. While fibroids are not cancerous, they can significantly impact quality of life.
Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids
Many fibroids cause no symptoms. However, when symptoms occur, they may include:
- Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
- Pelvic pain or pressure
- Abdominal bloating
- Frequent urination
- Constipation
- Pain during intercourse
- Fatigue related to iron deficiency anemia
Symptom severity often depends on the size, number, and location of the fibroids. If these symptoms are interfering with daily activities, it is time to speak with a physician about treatment options.
Traditional Treatment Options
Historically, hysterectomy — surgical removal of the uterus — has been presented as a primary solution for symptomatic fibroids. Myomectomy, a surgery that removes fibroids while preserving the uterus, may also be recommended.
While effective, surgical treatments:
- Require anesthesia
- Involve hospital stays
- Result in longer recovery times
- Carry surgical risks
- May impact fertility
For many women, surgery is not the only option.
A Minimally Invasive Alternative For Women Who Develop Fibroids – Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)
Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a safe, FDA-approved, minimally invasive procedure performed by fellowship-trained interventional radiologists. Rather than removing fibroids surgically, UFE treats them from inside the body.
Using image guidance, a physician inserts a tiny catheter through a small incision in the wrist or groin. The catheter is guided through the bloodstream to the uterine arteries that supply blood to the fibroids. Small embolic particles are then released to block blood flow to the fibroids. Without oxygenated blood, the fibroids shrink over time and symptoms improve.
Benefits of UFE
Compared to surgery, uterine fibroid embolization offers several important advantages:
- No large incision
- No removal of the uterus
- No general anesthesia in most cases
- Outpatient procedure
- Same-day discharge
- Faster recovery
- Lower overall complication risk
- Often lower cost than hospital-based surgery
Most patients return to light activity within several days.
Is UFE Effective?
Clinical studies show high patient satisfaction rates following UFE. The majority of women report significant improvement in heavy bleeding, pelvic pressure, and bulk-related symptoms. Fibroids typically shrink gradually over several months following treatment.
As with any medical procedure, individual results vary. A consultation and imaging evaluation help determine candidacy.
Insurance and Cost
Uterine fibroid embolization is covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid.
Because UFE is performed in an outpatient center rather than a hospital operating room, overall costs are often lower. Our team works directly with patients to verify insurance benefits and review expected out-of-pocket expenses prior to treatment.
Who Performs UFE?
UFE is performed by interventional radiologists — physicians who complete extensive fellowship training in minimally invasive, image-guided procedures.
At PrecisionIR, our board-certified physicians specialize in embolization techniques and work collaboratively with OB-GYNs and primary care providers to ensure comprehensive care.
When to Schedule a Consultation
If you have been diagnosed with uterine fibroids, or are experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, or pressure, a consultation can help determine whether uterine fibroid embolization is appropriate for you.
Our physicians will review your imaging, discuss all available treatment options, and work with your care team to develop a personalized plan.
