Fibroid Awareness Month

Every July, Uterine Fibroid Awareness Month spotlights a condition that affects millions of women, yet is still misunderstood and diagnosed too late. Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in or on the uterus. By age 50, up to 80% of women may develop fibroids, according to the National Institutes of Health. Despite their prevalence, many women don’t know they have them until symptoms interfere with their health, fertility, or quality of life.

This awareness month is dedicated to educating women, promoting early diagnosis, and encouraging research and better access to care. It’s also a chance to advocate for equity in treatment and to stand in solidarity with those affected.

Encouraging Early Fibroid Diagnosis

There is a range of fibroid symptoms—from heavy menstrual bleeding and pelvic pain to frequent urination, bloating, and even fertility challenges. However, these symptoms are often dismissed or mistaken for other conditions. As a result, many women suffer in silence, unaware that fibroids may be the underlying cause.

Uterine Fibroid Awareness Month is a reminder that women should feel empowered to ask questions about their health and seek medical advice when something feels off. Early diagnosis can open the door to treatment options that reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.

Promoting Research & Improving Access to Care

Awareness is only part of the equation. Advocacy organizations and medical groups use July as a platform to push for increased research funding and better access to care for women with fibroids. Research is essential for developing less invasive treatments and understanding why certain populations, particularly Black women, are disproportionately affected.

Access to care remains a critical issue. Some women are not informed of all treatment options, such as Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)—a minimally invasive procedure that can relieve symptoms without major surgery. Raising awareness helps ensure women have the information they need to make informed choices about their treatment.

Raising Awareness Through Education

Throughout the month, groups like Fibroid Fighters organize events such as wellness workshops, yoga classes, and educational webinars designed to support and inform women. These community events offer a chance for women to connect, share stories, and learn from medical experts.

Supporters also show solidarity by wearing white on July 1st, a symbol of hope and strength for those affected by fibroids. This simple gesture helps spark conversations and spread awareness both in-person and online.

With fibroids impacting so many women, awareness isn’t just important—it’s necessary. Early diagnosis, equitable access to care, and informed decision-making can make a profound difference in a woman’s life.

Uterine Fibroid Awareness Month serves as a powerful reminder that women deserve to be heard, supported, and fully informed when it comes to their reproductive health.
